The Noorani Qaida is a foundational method for learning to read the Quran. It starts from the single letter and its articulation point, moves through the disconnected letters, joining words, the short vowels, tanween, sukoon and shaddah, and finishes with the elongations and the core rules. At Katateeb Online it is taught in one-to-one lessons of 30 minutes with a teacher certified in the Noorani Qaida, and it is the right starting point for any child from 4 years old and any beginner who does not read Arabic — including a child born abroad. At two lessons a week, finishing it usually takes between 6 and 10 months depending on the child's age and consistency. Start with a free 15-minute intro — no card and no sign-up — and inside a monthly subscription the lesson price is $7.5, so cost starts at $30 a month.

Why does the Noorani Qaida come before memorisation?

The question that saves a parent a whole year: do we start with memorisation, or with foundations?

Without foundations

Memorisation first

  • The child memorises by ear and imitates a sound without reading
  • An error in articulation hardens with every repetition
  • A year later everything memorised has to be re-corrected
  • He cannot read a new surah on his own
With foundations

The Qaida first

  • The child reads the word rather than imitating its sound
  • Articulation is built correctly from the first letter
  • After the course he opens the Mus'haf and reads a surah he has never heard
  • Memorisation is then faster, because it is reading rather than repetition

The stages of the course

1

Single letters and articulation

Pronouncing each letter from its correct point, and distinguishing the close ones: ha and haa, seen and saad, dhaal and dhaa.

2

Joined letters and short vowels

Fatha, damma and kasra, then tanween, then reading two consecutive words.

3

Sukoon and shaddah

Joining and stopping, and the forms of shaddah — where children stumble most.

4

Elongations and core rules

Natural and secondary madd, and the rules of noon sakinah and tanween applied rather than theorised.

5

Full reading

Reading a complete surah from the Mus'haf correctly and without prompting — this is where the course ends.

Does it work for a child who doesn't speak Arabic at all?

Yes, and it is exactly the right starting point for him. Our teachers speak English, and instructions are given in English at first, then shrink gradually until the lesson runs in Arabic alone. A child born abroad does not have an ear trained on Arabic sounds, which makes foundations more important for him, not less. The only difference is that the letters stage takes him slightly longer.

Child safety

The boundaries of every lesson

  • A password-locked Zoom room
  • You may attend any lesson unannounced
  • Camera off on request
  • No recording, and never your child's name or face in an advert

Questions about this course

What is the Noorani Qaida, and why does it come before memorisation?+
The Noorani Qaida is a foundational method that starts from the single letter and its articulation point and ends with reading a complete surah correctly. It comes before memorisation because a child who memorises before he can read is imitating a sound: the articulation error hardens with every repetition, and a year later everything he memorised has to be re-corrected. Foundations first are slower in the first month and faster in the first year.
How long does the Noorani Qaida take?+
At two lessons a week (8 a month), it usually takes between 6 and 10 months. At one lesson a week it stretches to roughly a year. The biggest factor is not the number of lessons but the short daily review at home — 5 minutes a day cuts months off. We do not give a fixed duration before seeing the child in a real lesson.
What age can a child start the Noorani Qaida?+
Usually from 4, the age at which a child can sit for 30 minutes at a screen and distinguish close sounds. Starting earlier is possible but progress is slower. There is no upper limit — we teach it to teenagers and to adult beginners with the same method presented differently.
Does it work for a child who doesn't speak Arabic?+
Yes, and it is the right starting point for him. Our teachers speak English, and instructions are in English at first then shrink gradually. The only difference is that the letters stage takes slightly longer, because his ear is not yet trained on Arabic sounds.
What comes after the Noorani Qaida?+
The child moves to the Quran memorisation course already reading from the Mus'haf himself. Memorisation after foundations is faster because it is reading rather than repetition, and revision is easier because the child can open the Mus'haf and correct himself.
Do I need the Noorani Qaida book?+
Yes, a paper or digital copy. We send you the edition we use and its print number before the first lesson, and the same page is shared on screen during the lesson.
